Drum Your Grief

Drumming is music for the soul, and is also a practice that may help us process our grief.

Contained within the bountiful rhythms and various musical interpretations of drumming, we have the occasion to rest in the sway of a rhythm, ponder the imagery that unfolds, and find some peace in the consistency of the various rhythms that arise.
“Everyone in the world gets hit with loss and grief at some point in life, but most of us are totally unprepared to deal with it. Learning how to acknowledge, recognize—and even embrace—our grief allows us to start rebuilding our lives around our loss,” says Judy Coffin, program coordinator of ORA. Drumming is one approach that gathers us in, without the need to talk, or find words that are at times, so difficult to express. We can simply ‘be’ with the drum.

Our facilitator, Dr. Vivianne LaRivière , considers the drum an instrument of peace, and drumming as a spiritual and sacred practice. Drumming frees the minds, moves the body, is used at times in prayer and/or meditation and is symbolic of the universal heartbeat! She believes the energy of the drum can help us connect with our healing power, as it helps us get in touch with our emotions at a very deep level. Drumming our grief is a way of processing our grief by ourselves, and with others.
